Jagex Cancels RuneScape Reignited Following Player Backlash

The fresh-start project has been scrapped less than two weeks after its announcement, but RuneScape’s December update will still go ahead.

Jagex has officially cancelled RuneScape Reignited following significant criticism from players, admitting that the proposed fresh-start experience missed the mark.

The decision was announced in a video update and accompanying blog post, where creative director Mod Ryan thanked the community for its feedback and confirmed that development would not continue.

“I said on stage that we would not repeat the same mistakes of the past, and I truly stand by that. Considering this, we have made the decision to cancel Reignited,” Ryan explained.

The cancellation comes less than two weeks after the project was revealed at RuneFest, with the reaction from players prompting Jagex to reconsider its plans.

RuneScape’s December Update Still Going Ahead

Despite the cancellation, Jagex has confirmed that its planned December 2 update will proceed as scheduled.

The update will introduce an Adventure Guide and the first part of a remastered journey, alongside a 10-day free membership trial running from December 2 to December 12.

New characters, as well as existing characters that have not held membership since June 2, will be eligible to access members’ worlds and content during the promotional period.

Jagex also reiterated that it has no plans to split the community across separate game worlds as part of these changes.

2027 Roadmap Remains on Track

While RuneScape Reignited is no longer moving forward, Jagex confirmed that its previously announced 2027 roadmap remains unchanged.

The developer acknowledged that the controversy surrounding Reignited had overshadowed its roadmap reveal, which outlines plans to continue improving the game with its core community in mind.

For now, Jagex appears to be shifting its focus back towards the existing RuneScape experience, with the December update and longer-term development plans still moving ahead.

The cancellation serves as a reminder of how strongly established MMO communities can influence the direction of a game, particularly when proposed changes threaten to repeat mistakes from the past.
