Marvel’s Wolverine has received its official ESRB rating, confirming the game’s mature content while also raising questions about the inclusion of in-game purchases.
The upcoming Insomniac Games title has been rated M for Mature, with the ESRB citing intense violence, blood and gore, strong language, nudity, and depictions of dismemberment, making it one of the studio’s most mature releases to date.
However, eagle-eyed fans also noticed that the ESRB listing includes the descriptor “In-Game Purchases.”
While the wording may suggest microtransactions, it doesn’t necessarily mean players will be able to buy cosmetics or other premium content.
A similar descriptor appeared on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, despite the game featuring no traditional microtransactions. Instead, it referred to the ability for players to purchase the Digital Deluxe Upgrade after buying the Standard Edition, unlocking additional suits and bonus content.
The same could be true for Marvel’s Wolverine, which is available in both a Standard Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition, with the latter including additional digital content. If so, the ESRB’s “In-Game Purchases” label would simply reflect the option to upgrade editions after launch rather than the presence of a live-service storefront.
At this stage, neither Insomniac Games nor PlayStation has confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine will feature microtransactions.
For now, the ESRB listing appears to point toward edition upgrades rather than cosmetic purchases, though fans will have to wait for an official clarification closer to launch.
