Grasshopper Manufacture, the studio behind No More Heroes and Killer7, has officially split from NetEase Games and will once again operate as an independent developer.
The announcement was made by the studio, which was acquired by NetEase Games in 2021 after previously being owned by GungHo Online Entertainment. The separation marks a new chapter for the Japanese developer as it looks to expand its creative freedom and explore a wider range of game genres.
Grasshopper Manufacture Returns to Independence
In a statement, studio representative director and CEO Goichi Suda, also known as Suda51, explained that the decision followed discussions with NetEase Games.
“Grasshopper Manufacture has chosen to move forward with as an independent developer once again,” Suda said, adding that the decision was reached with NetEase’s cooperation.
The studio is now looking to create titles across a wider variety of styles while maintaining the distinctive identity that has defined its games over the years.
Suda also noted that Grasshopper Manufacture has improved its self-publishing capabilities, giving the company more options for releasing future projects.
Despite the separation, the CEO stressed that the relationship between Grasshopper Manufacture and NetEase remains positive, leaving the door open for potential collaborations in the future.
What’s Next for Grasshopper Manufacture?
The announcement follows the release of ROMEO IS A DEAD MAN in February 2026, which Suda said received strong reviews and praise from players.
With the project completed, the studio is turning its attention toward its next phase of development as it approaches its 30th anniversary in 2028.
Grasshopper Manufacture has built a reputation for unconventional games, including No More Heroes, The Silver Case, and Killer7. Its return to independence could give the team greater flexibility in determining which projects to pursue and how to bring them to market.
For now, the studio has not announced its next game, but Suda has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering distinctive experiences with the creative identity fans have come to expect.
Grasshopper Manufacture’s departure from NetEase marks another significant shift in the gaming industry’s evolving relationship between independent developers and major publishers.
