Recent reports suggest that Sony has ended its collaboration with Sweet Baby Inc. (SBI), a narrative consulting firm led by Kim Belair. This development comes amid Sony’s decision to cancel several projects involving SBI, including a potential sequel to “God of War: Ragnarok” and “Spider-Man 2.”
SBI has been under scrutiny for its influence on game narratives, with critics arguing that their focus on diversity and inclusion has led to content perceived as lacking authenticity. Notably, games influenced by SBI, such as “Spider-Man 2,” have faced criticism for incorporating social justice themes, leading to a decline in sales compared to previous titles in the series.
Sony’s recent cancellations align with a broader industry trend, as the company has also discontinued other live-service projects, including titles from studios like Bluepoint Games and Bend Games. These actions highlight the challenges and shifting strategies within the gaming industry, particularly concerning live-service models and narrative direction.
While official statements from Sony regarding the termination of its relationship with SBI are pending, these developments have sparked discussions among gaming communities, reflecting a growing sentiment against perceived ideological influences in game development.
