PlatinumGames Is Seemingly Hiring for Another Online Action Game

Despite the public failure of Babylon’s Fall, PlatinumGames is not retreating from the online action space. In fact, new job listings suggest the studio is already working on a fresh project in the same genre.

Spotted on PlatinumGames’ official careers site, several open positions reference work on an “online action game.” One particular listing calls for a game designer with “experience creating gameplay systems for online multiplayer action titles” and “knowledge of level design for online or open-world games.” These qualifications strongly hint that the developer is gearing up for a new live service or multiplayer-focused experience.

This development comes just two years after the studio released Babylon’s Fall, a co-op action RPG published by Square Enix that launched to poor reviews and dwindling player counts. The game was widely criticized for its dated visuals, repetitive gameplay loop, and lack of compelling endgame content. It was officially shut down in early 2023—less than a year after launch.

For many studios, a high-profile failure of that scale might lead to a change in direction. But PlatinumGames doesn’t appear to be shying away from its ambitions. In past interviews, CEO Atsushi Inaba has reiterated that the studio sees online and live service games as a major part of its future. Rather than abandoning the concept, Platinum seems determined to learn from its past mistakes and try again.

It’s currently unclear whether this new online project is being developed independently or in partnership with another publisher. Babylon’s Fall was co-developed with Square Enix, and insider reports suggested creative friction between the two companies. A self-published project could give Platinum more creative control—but would also require significantly more internal resources and infrastructure.

The studio has been in a period of transition in recent years, expanding its focus beyond the tight, single-player action games it’s known for, such as Bayonetta and Astral Chain. The shift toward multiplayer and live service models represents a major strategic pivot—one that carries both risks and rewards.

There’s no official announcement or teaser for the new game yet, but the job listings speak for themselves. PlatinumGames is assembling a team with online experience, and that usually means something is already in motion behind the scenes.

Whether this upcoming title can avoid the pitfalls that brought down Babylon’s Fall remains to be seen. But if nothing else, PlatinumGames is showing it’s not afraid to get back up after a fall.
