Square Enix has officially pulled the curtain back on one of the more unexpected reveals from Fan Festival 2026 a full crossover between Final Fantasy XIV and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Titled “Ghosts of Desire,” the collaboration isn’t a limited-time event. Instead, it’s being positioned as the core Alliance Raid series for the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold expansion.
A Full-Scale Endgame Play
This is where things get interesting.
Unlike smaller crossover content, Ghosts of Desire will roll out as a multi-part 24-player Alliance Raid, putting it on the same level as previous long-form collaborations like NieR: Automata. In other words, this is permanent, narrative-driven content baked directly into the expansion’s lifecycle.
Square Enix has also confirmed direct collaboration with Evangelion’s creative side, suggesting this won’t just be surface-level fan service.
What’s Actually Been Revealed
Details are still tightly controlled, but here’s what’s confirmed so far:
- A multi-tier Alliance Raid series tied to Evercold’s post-launch roadmap
- Evangelion-themed enemies, encounters, and visual design elements
- Integration into FFXIV’s ongoing narrative structure
- More information expected across the remaining Fan Festival cycle
No gameplay footage yet and that’s likely deliberate.
The Big Question
Evangelion isn’t exactly an easy fit.
Its tone, themes, and visual identity are very specific far removed from FFXIV’s usual fantasy setting. The challenge here isn’t scale, it’s execution.
Can Square Enix translate Evangelion into something that feels cohesive inside FFXIV’s world, rather than a disconnected crossover?
This is a high-risk, high-reward move.
If it lands, Ghosts of Desire could sit alongside FFXIV’s best raid series. If it doesn’t, it risks feeling like a novelty that never quite fits.
Either way, it’s one of the most ambitious crossover plays the game has made.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on this as more details surface especially once gameplay is shown.
