Square Enix has officially shared the first teaser for Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, the newly retitled next mainline entry in the legendary RPG franchise.
Previously announced as Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, the project has now undergone a major reboot following what the team describes as significant development hurdles.
In a new video update, executive producer Yosuke Saito confirmed the game’s development was effectively restarted after internal restructuring.
“We’re hard at work on XII, but due to a reshuffle of the team and a restart of development, it’s going to be a bit longer till it’s in your hands.”
Saito explained that after ongoing discussions with series creator Yuji Horii, the team ultimately decided to rebuild the project from scratch in order to better define what a modern mainline Dragon Quest game should be.
“It was a major decision but I believe it was the right one to ensure the next Dragon Quest game will be the one that all you fans of the series will really love.”
The teaser itself offers the first glimpse at the game’s darker fantasy direction, though gameplay and release details remain under wraps.
The announcement comes as the Dragon Quest series celebrates its 40th anniversary, with anticipation for Dragon Quest XII remaining incredibly high despite the game originally being announced nearly five years ago.
