One of the biggest highlights of Sony’s June 2026 State of Play was the long-awaited return of Marvel’s Wolverine, with developer Insomniac Games showcasing an extended look at Logan’s savage combat and story.
Opening the presentation, the gameplay demo focused on Wolverine attempting to rescue a group of captured mutants, putting players directly into the claws of Marvel’s iconic antihero. The footage showcased a much darker and more violent tone than Insomniac’s acclaimed Spider-Man titles, featuring brutal finishers, intense close-quarters combat, and plenty of bloodshed.
Unlike the open-world structure of the studio’s Spider-Man games, Wolverine appears to embrace a more focused, story-driven action-adventure approach. The showcased mission highlighted a mix of exploration, stealth, and explosive combat encounters, with Logan tearing through enemies using his claws, heightened senses, and relentless aggression.
The trailer also teased connections to the wider X-Men universe, including brief glimpses of familiar mutant characters. Most notably, fans caught a look at Jean Grey, hinting that Wolverine won’t be fighting alone as the story unfolds.
From the fluid animations to the visceral combat system, the gameplay reveal suggests Insomniac is aiming to deliver a superhero experience that feels distinctly different from Spider-Man while still maintaining the studio’s trademark polish.
Marvel’s Wolverine is shaping up to be one of PlayStation’s biggest exclusives and perhaps Insomniac’s most ambitious Marvel project yet.
