Studio MDHR has revealed two new projects set in the Cuphead universe, including a brand-new hand-animated Cuphead game and an unexpected retro spin-off called Mighty Cuphead Adventure.
The new mainline Cuphead title is currently in early development and will feature the studio’s signature hand-drawn animation style. While details remain limited, Studio MDHR says the game will take Cuphead and friends on a fresh adventure, with more information to be shared at a later date.
Alongside the announcement, the studio also unveiled Mighty Cuphead Adventure, an 8-bit action platformer inspired by classic 1980s games.
In true Studio MDHR fashion, the project goes beyond simply copying a retro aesthetic. The game is being programmed in Assembly language and built around the specifications of the Sega Master System. It will launch on modern platforms, but players will also be able to purchase a physical cartridge compatible with original Sega Master System hardware.
“Craftsmanship is at the heart of everything we do here at Studio MDHR,” co-founder Chad Moldenhauer said in a statement.
While the new Cuphead game is still years away, Mighty Cuphead Adventure could give fans something to look forward to much sooner. Studio MDHR says more details on the retro spin-off will be revealed in the coming months.
