Blood of Dawnwalker Director Says Delaying Next-Gen Consoles Would Benefit Developers

Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, director of the upcoming RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker and former game director of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, believes the current console generation should last longer, arguing that delaying new hardware would give developers more time to focus on making better games.

Speaking about the potential for an extended console cycle, Tomaszkiewicz said developing for familiar hardware allows studios to spend less time overcoming technical hurdles and more time refining gameplay.

“When you have the game and you know the systems and the features adjusted to these particular consoles, you know what you need to do. Always, a new platform is a new challenge.”

He explained that every new console requires developers to learn unfamiliar hardware, discover its limitations, and optimize games for additional platforms.

According to Tomaszkiewicz, The Blood of Dawnwalker is already being built across multiple platforms, with separate versions for Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. Introducing a new console generation would significantly increase the workload through extra builds, testing, and post-launch support.

“When you have next-gen, you’re adding an additional two builds, and it multiplies the amount of work you need to do… It’s a huge effort, to be honest, and if we work on the consoles we have right now, it’s easier.”

While he acknowledged that more powerful hardware enables better visuals and advanced technical features, Tomaszkiewicz believes those improvements have less impact on game design itself.

“It’s not really impacting the design… when you have stronger hardware, you can do more stuff more easily.”

His comments come as speculation continues over when Sony and Microsoft will introduce their next generation of consoles, with many developers weighing the benefits of new hardware against the growing complexity of multi-platform development.
