Nexon Reportedly Wants to Make a New StarCraft Game

The Arc Raiders publisher is reportedly negotiating with Blizzard for the rights to the iconic RTS franchise.

Nexon, the publisher behind Arc Raiders, is reportedly in discussions with Blizzard to secure a license to develop a new StarCraft game.

According to a report from South Korean newspaper Chosun, a contract between the two companies could be close to being finalized. If true, the deal would see Nexon develop a new entry in Blizzard’s long-dormant sci-fi strategy franchise.

StarCraft originally launched in 1998 and remains particularly popular in South Korea, where the game reportedly continues to rank among the top 10 most-played titles in internet cafés.

The potential deal is also interesting given Nexon’s increasing use of generative AI in game development. Nexon CEO Junghun Lee has previously spoken positively about the technology, which could raise questions about how a potential StarCraft project would approach AI-generated content.

Meanwhile, Blizzard is reportedly developing its own StarCraft spin-off, said to be an open-world shooter.

Neither Blizzard nor Nexon has officially confirmed the reported licensing deal, so for now, StarCraft fans will have to wait and see whether this becomes something more than negotiations.
