Square Enix has quietly released a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Star Ocean: The Second Story R, with the enhanced edition available now on the Nintendo eShop.
The announcement came without any prior marketing or reveal, making it the latest Square Enix title to receive a surprise launch on Nintendo’s newest console.
Star Ocean: The Second Story R originally launched for the Nintendo Switch alongside other platforms in 2023. The newly released Nintendo Switch 2 version is available as a standalone purchase, giving players another way to experience the acclaimed remake.
While Square Enix has yet to publish a detailed list of technical improvements, the Switch 2 edition is expected to benefit from the console’s more powerful hardware, including a higher resolution and improved overall performance.
No Upgrade Path for Existing Owners
Players who already own the original Nintendo Switch version should be aware that Square Enix has not provided an upgrade option.
Like several of the publisher’s other Nintendo Switch 2 releases, the enhanced version is sold separately, meaning existing owners will need to purchase it again if they want to play on Nintendo’s latest hardware.
Square Enix has also confirmed that save data is not compatible between the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 versions, meaning progress cannot be transferred.
