Xbox Backward Compatibility Comes to PC

Back Compat PC

Microsoft has officially launched Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC, bringing original Xbox games to Windows PCs and PC gaming handhelds for the first time.

The new feature debuted straight away with four classic Xbox titles, all available to purchase individually or through Xbox Game Pass, marking what Microsoft says is the beginning of a long-term effort to preserve its gaming history on PC.

Four Original Xbox Classics Available Now

The first wave of supported titles includes:

  • BLiNX: The Time Sweeper
  • Conker: Live & Reloaded
  • Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
  • Fuzion Frenzy

All four games are playable today through the Xbox app on PC and are also included with every Xbox Game Pass tier.

Players who already own a digital Xbox license for any of these games will automatically gain access on PC at no additional cost through Xbox Play Anywhere.

Enhanced for Modern Hardware

Rather than simply emulating the original releases, Microsoft has added several enhancements designed specifically for PC players while preserving the original gameplay experience.

New features include:

  • Up to 4x resolution upscaling
  • VSync support
  • Fullscreen and windowed display modes
  • Enhanced anti-aliasing
  • Anisotropic filtering
  • Customisable language and audio settings

The games are also fully compatible with supported Windows gaming handhelds.

Achievements Coming Later This Year

Microsoft also confirmed that Achievements are finally coming to select original Xbox titles through the new backward compatibility program.

The feature has long been requested by fans and will arrive later this year, with the initial four supported games receiving Achievement support in a future update.

The company says additional features and quality-of-life improvements will continue rolling out as more games join the service.

More Classic Xbox Games Planned

According to Microsoft, today’s release is only the beginning.

The company describes Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC as part of a broader initiative to preserve Xbox’s gaming legacy and make classic titles playable across modern devices.

More original Xbox games are expected to be added over time, although Microsoft has not yet confirmed which titles will be next.

Minimum PC Requirements

To use Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC, players will need:

  • Operating System: Windows 11
  • RAM: 8GB
  • CPU: Intel Core i3-8100, AMD Ryzen 3 1200, or equivalent
  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 550, Intel UHD 770, or Intel Arc A310

Microsoft also recommends more powerful hardware for the best experience, including a six-core processor, 8GB of VRAM, and a DirectX 12-compatible graphics card.

With the arrival of original Xbox games on PC, Microsoft has taken another major step toward unifying its ecosystem across console, PC, cloud, and handheld devices while ensuring classic titles remain accessible for years to come.
