Double Fine Productions has laid off 23 employees, just three weeks after becoming an independent studio following Microsoft’s major Xbox restructuring.
The announcement was made by studio founder Tim Schafer, who described the decision as one made solely to ensure the studio’s long-term survival.
In a statement shared on social media, Schafer said the layoffs were an unfortunate but necessary consequence of Double Fine’s transition away from Xbox ownership.
“Today, Double Fine Productions let go of 23 members of its staff. As a small, tightly knit team, these actions are not taken lightly. Only the survival of our studio would ever make us consider such a painful action.”
He explained that operating independently requires the studio to reduce its size to one that can be financially sustained.
“Our transition to becoming an independent company means becoming a size that we can sustain.”
Schafer also thanked those affected, saying every departing employee had contributed to the studio’s games and culture, and pledged to support them during the transition.

Double Fine is not the only former Xbox studio facing uncertainty.
Following Microsoft’s restructuring, Compulsion Games also began seeking new publishing opportunities after returning to independent status, with several employees reportedly looking for new roles in the weeks surrounding the split.
According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Double Fine employed around 90 people before the layoffs, meaning the studio has reduced its workforce by roughly a quarter.
Despite the difficult decision, Schafer reiterated that the move was intended to secure Double Fine’s future as an independent developer.
With the studio now operating on its own once again, its next challenge will be balancing its distinctive creative identity with the financial realities of today’s games industry.
