Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition Announced

Ghost of Yotei isn’t finished with Atsu just yet.

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Sucker Punch Productions have announced a substantial post-launch update for the open-world samurai adventure, including a brand-new narrative expansion, a single-player survival mode inspired by roguelikes, additional cosmetics and quality-of-life improvements.

Better yet, players won’t have to wait long.

The new content will launch on October 1 alongside the Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition, which will also be available physically.

Echoes of Sekigahara Expands Atsu’s Story

The biggest addition is Echoes of Sekigahara, a new narrative expansion that appears to take a more personal approach to Atsu’s story.

The expansion will move between the present day and flashbacks to Atsu’s time on the Japanese mainland, introducing Nagato, a character from Atsu’s past who has now arrived in Ezo.

In the present-day portion, players will venture into a previously unexplored valley that was once occupied by The Snake and his followers, known as the Vipers.

The flashbacks, meanwhile, will take Atsu back to the Battle of Sekigahara, exploring a significant period of her life before she eventually returned home and embarked on her quest for vengeance.

It’s an interesting structure for an expansion because it gives Sucker Punch an opportunity to explore parts of Atsu’s history that the main game could only hint at And, naturally, there’s plenty of new gear to go alongside the story.

Players can expect new enemies, heavy weapons, armour sets, dyes and other additions.

Most Wanted Turns Ghost of Yotei Into a Roguelike

If the prospect of another story chapter isn’t enough, Sucker Punch is also introducing Most Wanted, a new single-player combat survival mode.

The studio describes it as its own take on the roguelike genre.

Players will accept bounties before beginning a run, with successful encounters rewarding perks and eventually unlocking additional characters. The trailer also gives us a glimpse at how the different characters will approach combat. Atsu is built around the dual katana, Oyuki specialises in the kusarigama, while Nagato brings a yari into battle.

Considering how much emphasis Ghost of Yotei places on its combat system, this could end up being more than just a throwaway side mode.

Sucker Punch has already highlighted the combat clips and reels players have been sharing online, and Most Wanted seems designed around taking that combat mastery and turning it into a repeatable challenge.

The studio says more details will be revealed soon.

Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition Is Coming

Alongside the new content, Sony is releasing Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition for $69.99 USD.

The package includes the base game, the new Echoes of Sekigahara expansion, Most Wanted and Ghost of Yotei Legends, the game’s online cooperative experience supporting up to four players.

It will also include all of the content previously found in the Digital Deluxe Edition, alongside the Charm of Hokkyokusei.

Players who purchase the Complete Edition before September 30 will also receive early access to the Sakai Armor for Atsu on October 1.

It’s a neat call back to Jin Sakai and his family armour from Ghost of Tsushima, giving fans of the previous game another reason to check out the new gear.

If you’ve already purchased Ghost of Yotei, you don’t need to buy the game again. The Complete Edition Upgrade will cost $14.99 USD and includes access to Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted.

Players who don’t already own the Digital Deluxe Edition content and Charm of Hokkyokusei will also receive that content immediately when they pre-order the upgrade. Pre-ordering before September 30 also grants the early Sakai Armor unlock.

There Are Plenty of Smaller Additions Too

Sucker Punch isn’t stopping with the headline additions.

Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition will introduce new tracks for Watanabe Mode, which will be playable throughout the entire game whenever the mode is enabled.

There will also be additional Photo Mode stamps, new cosmetics for New Game+, and new Trophies tied specifically to Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted.

Even players who aren’t interested in purchasing the expansion will receive something on October 1.

A new Beauty of Yotei mode will be added to the game for existing owners, essentially turning Ezo into a screensaver-like experience. Players can sit back and enjoy the game’s environments, or use the mode as another way to capture new Photo Mode shots.

There are also some genuinely useful quality-of-life additions coming in the patch.

Players will be able to maintain the appearance of one armour set while using the stats of another, meaning you won’t have to sacrifice a preferred outfit simply because another set offers better gameplay benefits. A new high-contrast accessibility option is also being added.

Ghost of Yotei Is Getting a Lot Bigger

The interesting thing about this announcement is just how much Sucker Punch is adding to Ghost of Yotei.

Echoes of Sekigahara looks like the traditional story expansion, giving players more insight into Atsu and her past. Most Wanted, meanwhile, appears to be aimed directly at players who simply can’t get enough of the game’s combat.

Add in Ghost of Yotei Legends, New Game+ additions, Photo Mode content and the free Beauty of Yotei update, and October is shaping up to be a pretty substantial second chapter for the game.

For anyone who thought Atsu’s story was over, it looks like Sucker Punch has a little more unfinished business in Ezo.
