Changes at Xbox including Halo moving to Activision

Xbox 25 anniversary controller in hands

The promised reset at Xbox continues with many structural changes and unfortunately another 268 job cuts across the organisation.

Matt Booty has announced this next round of changes and job cuts via an email sent out to everyone at Xbox and posted to Xbox Wire which stated that this “bring us roughly three-quarters of the way through previously announced restructuring.”

The changes being made at Xbox:

  1. World’s Edge and Rare will now report into Activision.
  2. Activision is building a purpose-built team to take over development of Halo. Halo Studios has been reduced to a small team to “continue supporting the Halo community and games in-market.”
  3. Obsidian will now report into Bethesda and will continue to support Grounded alongside developing a new Fallout project.
  4. Playground Games and Turn 10 are merging into a single studio.
  5. The sale of Ninja Theory has fallen through and is likely to be closed.

Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through. We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.

It is unfortunately being widely reported (link to Rock Paper Shotgun article) that World’s Edge studio size was halved and their next game cancelled.
