Square Enix’s latest HD-2D RPG has surpassed Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s concurrent player record on Steam just days after launch.
Final Fantasy Resonance has set a new Steam player record for a single-player Final Fantasy title, reaching an impressive 42,885 concurrent players during its opening weekend.
According to SteamDB, the milestone was reached on October 25, surpassing the previous record of 40,564 concurrent players held by Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
While Final Fantasy XIV still holds a higher overall peak for the franchise on Steam, Resonance now leads the series when it comes to single-player entries.
Developed by Square Enix and Lancarse, Final Fantasy Resonance launched on October 22 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
The game reimagines the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius as a standalone RPG, marking the franchise’s first venture into Square Enix’s HD-2D visual style, combining detailed pixel-art characters with three-dimensional environments.
Combat features a traditional turn-based system built around exploiting enemy weaknesses, staggering opponents and earning additional turns. Players can also summon Visions, familiar Final Fantasy characters who provide additional abilities and powerful Resonance attacks.
The game has also received a strong reception on Steam, with 97% of its 1,514 English-language user reviews being positive at the time of reporting.
For those looking to try the game before purchasing, a free demo covering the opening chapter is currently available, with save data carrying over to the full release.
Final Fantasy Resonance is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
