Ember Lab has confirmed that Kena: Scars of Kosmora will launch in 2027, giving the team additional time to polish its next major adventure. The studio has also shared new details about the story, expanded world, and gameplay features.

Kena: Scars of Kosmora has been delayed to 2027, with developer Ember Lab confirming that the upcoming action-adventure game needs additional development time to meet the studio’s ambitions.

In a new update, Ember Lab’s Thomas Varga and Josh Grier explained that the team wants to deliver an experience that surpasses the quality of its 2021 debut, Kena: Bridge of Spirits, while significantly expanding the scope of the sequel.

According to the developers, moving the release into 2027 will give the team more time to polish the game’s expanded experience ahead of launch.

The announcement also included a deeper look at the game’s narrative, its mysterious island setting, and several of the new gameplay mechanics players can expect.

Kena: Scars of Kosmora Expands the Series’ Story

Kena: Scars of Kosmora follows Kena as she continues her journey as a Spirit Guide, a role that combines combat with spiritual healing. While she has spent years helping the dead find peace, the new adventure will challenge her to confront questions about her own past and what it means to guide the living.

The story sees Kena travel to the mysterious island of Kosmora after her childhood friend, Orfio, suggests that the location may hold answers to questions they have both been searching for.

The journey is expected to push Kena beyond her previous experiences, forcing her to confront personal struggles while learning more about her future as a Spirit Guide.

Ember Lab describes the game as a character-focused, linear adventure, similar to Bridge of Spirits, but with a broader and deeper scope. Players who venture away from the main path will also find additional opportunities to explore the world.

Four Elements Shape Kosmora’s World

Kosmora’s history plays a significant role in the upcoming adventure. According to Ember Lab, the island was once home to four interconnected cultures, each built around a different guiding element.

The ancient Spirit Guides of Kosmora developed their own methods of spiritual practice, using the four elements alongside Alchemystic Temples. However, a mysterious cataclysm destroyed one of the island’s cultures, leaving the remaining societies to carry on as ancient knowledge gradually faded.

The elements continue to influence how Kosmora’s surviving cultures live, but the loss of their deeper spiritual significance has created growing dangers across the island.

Players will explore complex Spirit Guide temples, which Ember Lab describes as challenging dungeon experiences. These areas will test players’ abilities while offering transformative rewards that help Kena progress throughout her adventure.

New Cultures and a Crystalline Companion

Beyond its ancient history, Kosmora is home to several living cultures, each with its own traditions, values, and challenges.

Kena’s journey will bring her into contact with the people of these different regions, with the story exploring how the island’s past continues to affect its inhabitants. Players can expect Kena to draw on her experience as a Spirit Guide while adapting to new situations and characters.

Traversal will also receive a significant upgrade. With the world expanding beyond the scale of Bridge of Spirits, Kena will have a new way to travel across the island: a mysterious crystalline canine companion.

The creature is directly tied to both the island’s origins and the game’s gameplay systems. In addition to serving as a mount, it will assist Kena in combat, including encounters fought on foot, and help her solve Alchemystic puzzles.

The partnership between Kena and her new companion will be central to the adventure, as the pair work to heal the spiritual wounds affecting the island while Kena confronts the scars of her own past.
