Bungie Confirms Final Destiny 2 Live-Service Update Launches June 9

Destiny Final

Bungie has announced that the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 will launch on June 9, officially marking the end of active development for the long-running sci-fi shooter.

In a heartfelt statement shared with players, Bungie reflected on nearly 12 years spent building the Destiny universe alongside its community, calling the journey a “monumental privilege.”

According to the studio, the decision comes after the events of Destiny 2: The Final Shape, with Bungie now shifting focus toward “a new beginning” and the incubation of its future projects.

“As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games,” the studio said.

While active content development is ending, Bungie confirmed that Destiny 2 will remain playable moving forward, much like the original Destiny still is today. The final update will also introduce changes designed to make the game easier for returning players to revisit over time.

The announcement closes a major chapter not only for Bungie, but for one of gaming’s biggest live-service franchises of the last decade. From the Cosmodrome to the Pale Heart, Destiny 2 evolved through expansions, seasonal content, raids, and community events that shaped a massive ongoing universe.

Bungie ended its message by thanking players for the memories, friendships, and adventures shared throughout the series’ lifespan:

“From the deepest part of our hearts, thank you, and we’ll see you in the stars.”
