Big news could finally be on the horizon for Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate fans.
During a recent appearance on the KosoKoso podcast, series creator Yuji Horii reportedly revealed that a special Square Enix livestream is scheduled for May 27, 2026, where the company will “be able to announce the next title/work.”
Horii also teased that the broadcast will feature “various other things besides the next title too,” suggesting multiple announcements tied to the franchise’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
While Horii didn’t explicitly mention Dragon Quest XII, speculation is already ramping up. The long-awaited RPG was first announced nearly five years ago, yet Square Enix has shown virtually nothing from the project since its reveal.
That said, fans shouldn’t rule out remakes or remasters either. Square Enix has leaned heavily into legacy Dragon Quest projects in recent years, and there’s also growing evidence that Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age could be headed to Nintendo Switch 2.
The timing of the stream is significant. The original Dragon Quest launched in Japan on May 27, 1986, meaning the franchise officially turns 40 this month.
After years of silence surrounding the series’ future, it looks like Square Enix may finally be ready to pull the curtain back. Please god pull the curtain back.
