Square Enix has shared a wealth of new details about Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, the MMORPG’s upcoming 8.0 expansion, while also confirming that Final Fantasy XIV will officially launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, 2026.

The announcements were made during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Berlin, where Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida unveiled a new extended teaser trailer, the expansion’s first playable job, multiple gameplay features, and two major crossover events.

Evercold Launches in January 2027

Evercold marks the beginning of the Godless Realms Saga, taking players to the frozen world of the Fourth as the Warrior of Light embarks on a brand-new adventure.

The five-minute teaser trailer offered the first extended look at the expansion’s new locations, story, and enemies, while highlighting several of the systems coming in Patch 8.0.

New Job: Bastion

The first new job arriving in Evercold is Bastion, a main tank class that wields a pair of massive shields known as Skyltborgs.

Designed around heavy defence and frontline combat, Bastion brings a unique playstyle to Final Fantasy XIV, with Square Enix showcasing the job in action during a brand-new gameplay trailer.

More Player Freedom

One of the biggest gameplay changes in Evercold is a more open approach to progression.

Instead of following a single linear path through the main story, players will be able to choose which regions to tackle first.

To support this, Square Enix is introducing Auto Content Balancing, allowing dungeon difficulty and enemy levels to dynamically scale based on a player’s chosen route.

The expansion also introduces Character Action Skins, letting players customise the animations for common actions such as Teleport and Warp, with support for additional job animations planned in future updates.

Character creation is also receiving a significant overhaul, including:

  • A new colour picker
  • More detailed facial customisation
  • Expanded eye and lip adjustments
  • New cosmetic options such as eye shadow
  • Additional appearance tweaks

Final Fantasy VII Remake Crossover Confirmed

One of the keynote’s biggest surprises was the announcement of Beyond the Lifestream, a brand-new eight-player raid series based on the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy.

The crossover is being developed in collaboration with Final Fantasy VII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi, with both development teams working together to create an original raid experience inspired by the iconic RPG.

Evangelion Collaboration Returns

Square Enix also shared a new teaser for Ghosts of Desire, the previously announced Evangelion alliance raid series.

The collaboration has gained another high-profile contributor, with acclaimed director and animator Mahiro Maeda joining the project as a special guest artist and designer.

Maeda is best known for his work on the Evangelion films and Mad Max: Fury Road, making his involvement a major addition to the crossover.

Nintendo Switch 2 Version Launches August 4

Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV launches for Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4, with pre-orders available now through the Nintendo eShop.

The Switch 2 version will support:

  • The Free Trial
  • Starter Edition

Players will not need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to play online.

However, the Switch 2 version will require its own monthly subscription, separate from subscriptions on other platforms. Existing subscribers on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC will receive a 50% discount on the Switch 2 subscription fee.

To celebrate the launch and help ensure server stability, Square Enix is also offering approximately one month of free subscription time for Switch 2 players.

The company also unveiled the Evercold Collector’s Bundle, which includes a premium art box, a Reaper figure, an Odin mount, exclusive emotes, and several physical collectibles.

Finally, Square Enix confirmed that while PlayStation 4 support will continue through the launch of Evercold, the platform is approaching its storage limitations. The company currently expects PS4 support to conclude following Patch 8.3, approximately two years after the expansion launches.

With a brand-new story arc, major gameplay improvements, two high-profile crossover events, and the long-awaited arrival of the game on Nintendo Switch 2, Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is shaping up to be one of the MMORPG’s biggest expansions yet.
