The 2011 action RPG is back with a new Legacy Edition.

Fans of The Lord of the Rings have another reason to return to Middle-earth, as The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition has been released for modern platforms.

Originally released in 2011, the action RPG has been remastered by Aspyr and is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Switch, and PC.

Set alongside the events of the original trilogy, War in the North tells a separate story focused on the battle against Agandaur, a Black Númenórean servant of Sauron who is raising an army in the North.

Players can switch between three playable heroes: Eradan the Ranger, Andriel the Elven Loremaster, and Farin the Dwarven Champion, each bringing their own abilities and playstyles.

The game also supports up to three-player co-op, including online and split-screen multiplayer, alongside RPG progression, character customization and plenty of familiar locations and characters from Tolkien’s world.

The Legacy Edition also includes encounters with characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn and Elrond, while taking players through locations including Rivendell, Lothlórien, Mirkwood and the Lonely Mountain.

The game is available now for $29.50 AUD on most platforms. European releases for the Switch 2 and Switch versions are scheduled for October 18.

For a game that disappeared from modern platforms for years, War in the North making a surprise comeback is a pretty welcome bit of Middle-earth nostalgia.
